Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea: American Academy of Sleep Medicine Releases Guidance for Follow-Up Sleep Studies

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has issued its first-ever guidance for the appropriate use of follow-up polysomnography (PSG) or home sleep apnea tests (HSATs) on patients undergoing treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While AASM has previously issued guidelines addressing the initial indications for sleep apnea testing for diagnostic purposes, there has not been established guidance for clinicians about if or when follow-up testing should be performed in patients with a diagnosis of OSA. AASM’s new statement and guidelines were written by a task force of five sleep medicine experts.
